Col. Fred J. Cone

Retired Air Science Professor Col. Fred J. Cone, 91, passed away on Dec. 17, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona. While serving our nation with distinction during his 30-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps, Cone flew 800 combat missions during two tours in Vietnam. His bravery earned him numerous honors including the Navy Cross, Legion of Merit and Distinguished Flying Cross.

After joining Embry-Riddle as a professor of the Air Science Department, Cone inspired future pilots and engineers with his passion for aviation. As the longtime coach of Embry-Riddle’s Flight Team, Colonel Cone led the team to three NIFA National Championships, leaving a legacy of excellence and teamwork. After retiring, Cone continued his educational calling as a substitute teacher at schools in the Prescott and Chino Valley area.
